Pets and Fleas
This is Samatha (Sammy), my little girl schnauzer, I almost killed her trying to control fleas . During the summer the Pacific Northwest was infested with fleas, and being careful to keep infestations at bay with my babies, I was diligent bathing them weekly. Then it happened, GOOD GRIEF, I found a flea on one of my dogs during a bath. I marched down to the local pet/feed supply and purchased flea collars. I put the collars on immediately and let the dogs out in the yard to play. Sammy would not play, she appeared not to be feeling well. About 4 hours later, I discovered Sammy in the hallway lifeless! My husband and I rushed her to the vet. Our vet revived her and started to question her activities and asked how old the flea collar was she had on. We were instructed to take her home immediately and bathe all of our dogs and removed the collars and dispose them away from the house. The vet explained that they had lost 9 cats and 4 dogs so far during the summer from toxic reactions to flea collars. When I contacted the manufacturer, by email and phone they were unconcerned and offered no help to correct the problem.
This is a national brand pet company.
Flea collars kill fleas and can be toxic or deadly to your pet.
Hot weather and Pets
During warm weather when taking my pets out in their KARIPET®, I take an insulated lunch bag with water and a couple of reusable gel ice packs. I put an ice pack between my pet and my chest. We both stay cool and can switch packs when necessary.
Drawing Poultice or Drawing Ointment
Make a thick paste out of goldenseal root powder and Oil of Lavender or Tea Tree oil, spread the paste onto a clean piece of gauze, muslin, linen or white cotton sheeting sufficiently large to cover the affected area completely.
We have a total of 12 paws at our house and I usually have one of those paws with an insect sting, sliver or thorn to treat weekly during the summer. I use “white socks” children size, cut off the elastic top, cover gauze with the sock and secure with the cutoff elastic top. Wrap rubber band style (not to tight) around the leg.
Keep in place for 1-24 hours, as needed. The poultice draws out infection and neutralizes the toxins. Apply fresh poultices as needed, washing the area thoroughly after each poultice is removed.
